Final masterplan for Newbold Comyn recommended for approval

Newbold Comyn

The final masterplan for Newbold Comyn, which will see an extension to the nature reserve and mixed-use cycle tracks across the former golf course, is set to be discussed at the Council’s Executive on Tuesday 17 November.

The revised final masterplan takes account of the results of a public consultation carried out earlier this year which received 2215 responses, market testing with potential activity providers and the wider situation due to Covid-19.

One revision to the masterplan includes the removal of the planned high ropes, zip wires and activity centre. Whilst the consultation feedback was supportive of this type of activity, the market testing showed limited current interest from potential operators. It is therefore proposed to retain the location for a future outdoor activity to be reviewed by Spring 2022.

Other revisions include the removal of the adventure golf and 9-hole pitch and putt due to reduced operator interest in the current climate. As with the activity centre, this area will be retained for future outdoor activity and reviewed at the same time.

A new addition to the masterplan includes a ‘learn to ride’ area that will enable young children to learn to cycle and progress on to the other cycle trails available.

The extension to the nature reserve will also provide the Council with the opportunity to plant trees as part of its ambition to plant 160,000 trees across the district over the next ten years.

Following the agreement of the proposed masterplan, the Council will begin a phased approach based on the financial requirements for each aspect. The masterplan remains an outline document and each phase will be subject to relevant planning permissions.

The Council will also be working with Warwickshire County Council on a Traffic and Parking Assessment.

The meeting of the Executive can be watched live on the Council’s YouTube channel from 6pm on Tuesday 17 November.
